A fire tender was summoned to the Georgetown Prison, Camp Street, after a fire broke out early yesterday morning, in a section of the building.
According to a source, a “minor fire” erupted in a section of the Camp Street Prison yesterday, at 08:50h.
When contacted, a Guyana Fire Service official who declined to identify the section where the fire started, informed Stabroek News that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing and that the department is dealing with a report on the matter.
Prison officials also declined from offering any information. The Officer in charge at the Georgetown Prisons said although he is aware of what transpired, he was unable to disclose anything. Moreover, all efforts to reach Director of Prisons Welton Trotz were futile.
