A vigil was held yesterday to mark another anniversary of the “imposition” of the 1980 constitution under the government of late president Forbes Burnham.
October 6th marked the 34th anniversary year since the constitution was implemented.
Organiser Desmond Ali, of the Guyana United Artists group, was among a few persons present for the vigil at the Square of the Revolution yesterday.
Executive Chairman of the Blue CAPS Guyana Clinton Urling was also present.
Although the PPP, then in the opposition, had opposed the 1980 constitution, the party has been criticised for not seeking to make fundamental changes, including curtailing the powers of the executive presidency, after it assumed office in 1992.
Ali yesterday stated that the main idea of the vigil was to remind people of the 1980 Constitution and to serve as a reminder of the need for a fundamental change to end the stalemate in Guyana.
“We believe that it is time for us as Guyanese to effectively channel our energies and efforts to effect real and significant change in both our constitution and our social praxis, if we are to address the palpable sense that things are falling apart,” Ali wrote in a letter published in last Saturday’s Stabroek News.
