Junior National sprinter Kevin Abbensetts performances were not enough to prevent Queen’s College and St John’s College from topping Zone 1 and 2 in yesterday’s track events in the 2014 Inter-School Sports held at the Eve Leary ground.
The two respective zone winners managed to finish on a high after a collective effort from their athletes who ensured that they completed all their races and produced worthy results, despite not having big names such as Abbensetts and others in their camp.
The Inter Guiana games double gold medallist outsprinted his competitors in the Males Under-20 200 and 400m races but turned out to be mere personal feats as it failed to land his school in a good position after the academy managed to muster240 points placing fourth in Zone 1 as Queen’s College (361) and St John College (377) sat on top of the two zone tables. Abbensetts first destroyed the competition during the 100m which was contested under the blazing rays of the morning sun. The champion sprinter who quickly shot out of his blocks maintained his lead until inevitably crossing the finish line as he ate up the likes of second place winner Kareem Purch of the Guyana Technical Institute (GTI) who closely trailed him and third place Malcom Wills of Queen’s College, in the Zone 1 North Georgetown District.
After a series of less exciting races in the 1500m, 400m and other which were flocked mostly by the Under 15 or younger students from the various schools, the highlight of the day, the Male U-20 200m race proved to be the main event and the most anticipated.
Repeating what he did in the earlier in the day, Abbensetts showed why he continues to be a force to reckon with in the shorter categories as he yet again crossed the line with relative ease. Despite emerging victorious, the young sprinter was given a “run for his money” so to speak from Purch who for the second time in two races was tailgating him from the word go and even looked like producing an upset after gaining additional momentum a little over the 100 meter turn.
Abbensetts, however, held his nerve and maintained his speed as he crossed the finish line with ease leaving Purch to settle for another second place spot and Melroy Austin of Queens College to occupy the third position.
The three-day activity will continue today with track and field activities for Zone 3 while tomorrow’s Inter-Zone undertakings will bring down curtains on this year’s school sports.
