A 35-year-old gold miner was yesterday sentenced to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court, after having stolen cash and items from a sleeping logger.
Mark Latchman of Dredge Creek, Upper Pomeroon pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny, when he appeared in court unrepresented yesterday.
The court was told that between September 28 and 29, Latchman stole 1 green shoulder bag valued $8,000; 1 brown wallet valued $4000; 1 engine lead valued $28,000 and $203,000, a total value of $243,000, property of Neville Fredericks of Manawarin, Moruca.
The police said that on September 28, Fredericks sold some wood in the Pomeroon and he received $200,000 which he put in his wallet which had an additional $3,000.
Fredericks travelled to Charity to buy stocks and moored his boat around 10 pm and went to sleep on the stern.
When he awakened at 4 am the next day, he discovered his bag, wallet and engine lead missing.
A report was made to the police and investigations led to Latchman who when told of the allegation, admitted to stealing the items.
He said that he had given his sister $200,000 and spent the rest of the money.
None of the other items were recovered.
Latchman was subsequently sentenced to 18 months in prison.
