New UG students’ society president installed

Health Sciences student of the University of Guyana Joshua Griffith was yesterday officially installed as president of the University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS).

The students’ society’s annual elections were held on October 1, 3 and 4, to fill the posts of president and faculty representatives for the academic year 2014/1015.

According to UG Registrar Vincent Alexander, “statistics suggest that we have had an increase in participation this year compared to the last three years.”

The elected president will serve for a semester and a half.

Griffith indicated that he will lead the student government for the next year aiming for ‘less talk, more action.’

“My journey throughout was interesting,” he said, while noting that he had acted as president after the former UGSS president left for India to further his studies.

He highlighted the campaigns to increase tuition fees and the return of the UG student loan, with which he was involved.

He asked the faculty representatives to support him in moving forward to make UG a better place. “There is more to be done and we can’t run away from that,” said Griffith.

This year’s election saw the highest amount of votes from the faculty of Health Sciences and there was also an increase in the amount of votes from the Tain Campus in Berbice.

The four groups that contested in the elections were the Students Em-powerment Alliance, the Students Movement Advocating Real Trans-formation, the Students United Movement, which won the elections, and the Revolutionaries.
