D’Edward Sports Club of West Bank Berbice were on Monday crowned the 2014 Hand-in-Hand Insurance second division limited overs cricket champions of West Berbice after they defeated Hopetown United by seven wickets in the final at the Cotton Tree Die Hard ground.
D’Edward were indebted to Christian France’s five-wicket haul and an unbeaten half century from skipper Jaipaul Heeralall.
Hopetown United, batting first after winning the toss, found themselves 30 for 2 after six overs.
France, who was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) then got into the act picking up five consecutive wickets that saw Hopetown United slumping to 70 for 7 in the 16th over.
They were eventually dismissed for 92 in 18.4.
Medium-pacer Devendra Singh supported France’s effort by bagging 2-10.
In reply, D’Edward got off to a bad start but recovered when the hard-hitting Heeralall came to the crease and tore apart the Hopetown attack.
He featured in an unbroken fourth wicket stand 76 with Mahadeo Persaud, 16, to take his team home by seven wickets. Derrick Cadogan took 2 for 42 from six overs for the losing team.
At the presentation ceremony, Anil Beharry, Hubern Evans and Shabeer Baksh, all executive members of the Berbice Cricket Board, thanked the sponsors for their continued investment in West Berbice Cricket. Cash incentives and trophies valued over $100,000.00 were at stake.
