Residents of Sandy Babb Street, Kitty say nothing is being done about the continual flooding of their yards and are calling on the relevant authorities to step in and deal with the issue once and for all.
The residents told Stabroek News yesterday that the flooding is not a recent occurrence and they are unsure of just where it is coming from. “This thing has been happening about 2 to 5 years now,” one woman told this newspaper. She said the water would take a long time to recede from her yard and she believes that it is coming from an alternate source.
According to another resident, Ramjit Singh, multiple visits had been paid to the City Council, all to no avail. He added that an official also visited the area and meetings with the residents were held but nothing ever came out of it.
Residents have therefore resorted to “building up” their yards to alleviate the issue. However, this is not still enough and the flooding has continued over the years.
Recently, they explain-ed, the flooding has been accompanied by the pungent smell of sewage and has led to discomfort amongst residents.
“It especially affects the children because they have to be out every day and we have to be lifting them in and out of our homes,” one resident explained.
One man, who asked to remain anonymous, explained that he and his family own a shop in the area and are greatly affected when it floods. The water, he said, would quickly fill his shop. He also could not place the source of the flooding.
“The weather dry, dry and still the place flooded,” the man said.
To compensate, the man has built a lifted concrete walkway to allow customers into the shop. However, he is still concerned with the odour that lingers.
The residents are calling for the drains to be properly cleaned as they believe that it would help the situation some. Though they clean the drains themselves, this is still not enough, they said.
