The Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) yesterday crumbled to the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) by an innings and 274 runs on day one of their scheduled two day match.
Brian Sattaur’s century, Paul Wintz’s 10-wicket match haul and Christopher Barnwell’s all-round effort, orchestrated the win as action in the Hadi’s World Inc. /Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) first division two-day competition continued yesterday at the DCC ground.
Sattaur smashed a whirlwind 189, Wintz took 10-55 and Barnwell scored 56 and claimed five wickets to propel DCC to a convincing victory. Discarded national wicket keeper/batsman Derwin Christian also contributed to his team’s win with 75.
GYO batted first after winning the toss and were restricted to 91 all out from 26.2 overs while DCC responded with 403-6 declared in 43 overs. In GYO’s second turn at the crease they were shattered for 38-9 innings closed.
Sattaur’s innings included 12 fours and 21 sixes while Christian blasted four fours and five sixes in his innings. DCC initially was off to a bad start as they lost national opener Trevon Griffith for nought. However, that was the only hiccup for the Queenstown side.
GYO erred when they opted to take first strike against the swing of Wintz who made constant inroads into what seemed to be a depleted GYO’s batting lineup. He claimed 5-37 and was assisted by Barnwell, who captured 3-16 to rattle GYO in their first innings.
As though he was not satisfied, Wintz returned to collect 5-18 in GYO’s second innings. Wintz was once again supported by Barnwell who claimed 2-4.
For GYO, G. Deroche made 35 in their first innings while Trevon France took 3-91 from 14 overs.
Meanwhile, at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) ground, the host team, MSC (66-4) were struggling at the close in respond to Police first innings total of 187 all out in 58 overs.
Skipper Kelon Carmichael and Rakhael Greene will resume the innings today on four and nought respectively as they look to give MSC the first innings advantage. Ricardo Adams has so far taken two wickets for Police while D. Larose and Seon Daniels has taken a wicket each.
Steven Jacobs (11), Shemroy Barrington (09), Nkosie Barker (12) and Vishal Narayan (20) are the batsmen that are back in the hut. Earlier when Police batted, Parnell London scored an unbeaten 76 to rebuild his team’s innings after leg spinner Steven Sankar made early inroads by collecting five wickets. Jason Heyliger also scored 25 for Police.
The match will continue at 9:30 this morning with MSC still 121 runs adrift from first innings points with six wickets in hand.
