Junior star cyclist, Michael Anthony continues to show why he should be in the conversation when it comes to the nation’s premier riders.
Yesterday, the 18-year old prevailed over a field of some of Guyana’s best wheelsmen to cart off the winner’s trophy
and an ounce of gold in the third annual Kadir Mohamed Memorial Ounce of Gold road race.
The gold, which is worth approximately $US1200, is the highest first place prize for a one-day event in local cycling history.
The win, which came below the overhanging trees on Homestretch Avenue, provided a vital rebound from his performances last week in Suriname at the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships where he failed to step on the podium.
Anthony’s triumph will also be a confidence booster heading into the five-stage road race which rolls off tomorrow.
Anthony stopped the clock three hours, 19 minutes and 26 seconds and also pocketed two sprint prizes in the grueling, sun baked trek which rolled off at Homestretch Avenue, proceeded to Dora on the Linden Highway and returned to the point of origin for the finish.
Team Coco’s Rupen Companioni and last year’s winner, Paul DeNobrega finished on the podium while Robin Persaud, bronze medalist at the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships, Alonzo Ambrose and Team Coco’s Chris Holder completed the top six overall positions.
This year’s event attracted 45 starters. Other categorical winners yesterday were Junior Niles (under-45), Ian Jackson (over-45), Raphael Leung (juveniles) and Anthony (junior).
