Stewartville teenager Jameel Mounter, who was declared brain dead after being struck down by a vehicle driven by an official of the Education Ministry 15 days ago, succumbed on Saturday evening at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
His death came a week after doctors there declared him brain dead.
An autopsy determined that Mounter had a fractured skull and he died from haemorrhaging in the brain.
Mounter, 13, of Lot 76 Third Street, Stewartville Housing Scheme, was struck down at approximately 8 pm on September 28, on the West Coast Public Road.
‘D’ Division Commander, Senior Superintendent Ian Amsterdam when contacted yesterday, stated that following the completion of the investigation of the accident, if the police are not clear on the charge to be levelled against the ministry official, the file will be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. Amsterdam had previously informed this publication that the official is currently on bail.
According to reports, Mounter and his two cousins were heading to an event in a nearby village when he was hit from behind.
He had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the GPH on September 29, when he was referred from the Leonora Cottage Hospital. Melwyn Mounter, Jameel’s father, had told Stabroek News that his son has consistently regressed since his admittance to the GPH.
The boy’s family had criticised the ministry official on the assistance being offered and called on that ministry to assist in affording the teenager the opportunity of being treated by a brain specialist.
When contacted, Chief Education Officer Olato Sam had related that decisions were being made concerning Mounter’s condition. However, Mounter succumbed before the ministry made a decision.
