Contracts were signed yesterday for the rehabilitation of 3 city municipal markets under the Guyana ‘Clean-up my Country’ project, at the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development’s Board-room.
Associated Construction was also awarded a contract to construct the access road to a landfill site in Region Six.
The Bourda, Stabroek and La Penitence markets are set to benefit with washroom facilities, drain-age, street lighting repairs or installation of street lights and roof repairs. In addition, La Penitence Market will see the construction of a tarmac at the Hunter Street reserve.
When this newspaper asked why Kitty Market was not included in the project Minister of Local Government Norman Whittaker said that market was not covered, because the nature of the repairs needed was not manageable for the project.
A press release from the ministry stated that several contracts were signed for the work to be done at two of the three municipal markets (Bourda and La Penitence).
Resulting from visits to the markets in August by Whittaker, the release said, the six contracts for market infrastructure improvement were signed yesterday. De-silting of internal drains at La Penitence Market and the Bourda Market and Orange Walk contracts were awarded to Mike Lall. Meanwhile, contracts for the rehabilitation of a sanitary block at La Penitence Market, as well as the construction of a market tarmac and fence on Saffon and Hunter streets were awarded to Geoffrey James Construc-tion.
These works fall under the $500 million city clean-up campaign.
Meantime, as part of the ‘regional clean-up’, according to the release, Region Six is the first of five regions to benefit from rehabilitation/construction of access roads to the landfill sites to aid in the Regional Solid Waste Programme. Associated Construction was awarded the contract to construct the access road to the landfill site in Belle Vue.
All contracts were awarded by way of invitation to bids, which were advertised and subsequently tendered for on Septem-ber 23. The contacts signed yesterday amounted to a value of $41, 809,512 and work is expected to commence soon.
