Causing death by dangerous driving accused Nakash Persaud, 18, was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $1.5 million when his trial continued before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
However, Persaud was unable to post bail and remains in police custody.
Attorney Rodwell Jugmohan renewed his application for bail for his client using the time Persaud had already spent in custody as grounds and given that the offence is a bailable one.
It was reported that on June 11, Persaud of Lot 121 Village, Corentyne first struck down Delroy Park, who was cycling home from work at Kilmarnock Village. The driver reportedly failed to stop and sped away. He then allegedly slammed into Tabitha Latoya Bagot, 19; Juanita Malika Bagot, 16, and three-year-old Shamaine Cort, all of Philippi Farm, Corentyne. The accused then reportedly fled from that scene and struck down Matthew McBean.
After the third collision, it was reported, he was chased by public-spirited persons and cornered at Number 35 Village, where he lost control of his car and crashed into a drain.
Parks and McBean were seriously injured, while the Bagot sisters and Cort who was their niece, died.
Persaud was initially slapped with ten charges: 3 counts of causing death by dangerous driving, 3 counts of failure to stop after an accident, 3 counts of failure to render assistance and 1 count of driving under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyzer test conducted on Persaud right after the
accident found that he had consumed 68 microgrammes of alcohol, which was above the legally permitted amount of 35 microgrammes. He was not required to plead to the three causing death by dangerous driving charges, but entered a guilty plea for the seven others.
Later, he was read 3 additional charges: dangerous driving, failure to stop after an accident and failure to render assistance to an injured person. He pleaded not guilty to the additional charges.
Persaud, who is a market vendor is expected to return to court on October 20 for continuation of his trial.
