A labourer was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail after he broke and entered an attorney’s office and stole a number of items and cash.
It is alleged that between the October 11th and 12th, Gary Kanhai, of Thomas Street, Georgetown, broke and entered the office of attorney Emily Dodson and stole two Dell computers, a toilet set, a wheelbarrow, a webcam and a quantity of cash, totalling $373,000.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who heard the matter at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, was told that Dodson secured her office on October 11th and upon returning the next day she discovered what had transpired.
According to Prosecutor, Michael Grant, public-spirited citizens serving in the office compound saw Kanhai leaving with the items and called the police, after which he was subsequently arrested.
When asked to plead to the charge, Kanhai explained to the court that he did not steal the items. However, he admitted that he did fetch them away in a wheelbarrow and that he was paid $500 to carry out the task. He also said that he was brutally beaten and taken to the hospital by an ambulance afterward.
Although Kanhai repeatedly declared that he didn’t steal the items, the Chief Magistrate said that based on the fact that he knew the items were stolen and still carried them away he could be charged for the larceny.
Kanhai had been charged with two similar offences previously and had been in prison up to February of last year after being sentenced in one of the matters.
The stolen items were recovered and the court ordered that they be returned to Dodson.
