The New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council and employees recently stepped out of their offices and joined hands with their colleagues in the field to do enhancement work along Republic Road.
This marked yet another ‘Cleanup Campaign’ initiated by the council with hopes it will take root and grow. This particular campaign is aimed at sensitising residents of the town to the importance of maintaining a clean, tidy and healthy environment.
Deputy Mayor Harold Debydeen in an invited comment said, “Recently I spoke about the environment and I asked the people of the town to clear their surroundings and care the gift that they’ve got. The earth gives us everything we want; we have sustainability from the earth and we are doing our part by cleaning the Republic Road.” Debydeen added that the council “will continue to do cleaning within the township” and made a special appeal to the residents “to maintain it, stop littering on the parapets, don’t burn garbage on the parapets, keep garbage in your yards and we will come and collect it”.
When questioned about the irregularity with which the council collects and disposes of the solid waste produced by the town, the deputy mayor said it is a work in progress which will eventually find the perfect rhythm. He encouraged residents to contact the council to make complaints, recommendations or suggestions. “If we fail to come [and collect your garbage], or fail at anything else call us on 333-2667 and speak to the town clerk or 333-2104 for the health inspector.”
It was disclosed that the town council desires to lead by example. “We want other people, people of the township to follow to maintain the areas where they work and where they live. This is what we are doing, and we will continue to do it, it will take some time but residents have to be patient and play their part.”
