The National Gallery, Castellani House is currently hosting the annual exhibition of the Guyana Women Artists’ Association (GWAA).
The exhibition, now in its 26th year, opened last Wednesday with works of art in painting, textiles, found materials, sculpture, ceramics and digital photography, a release from the National Gallery stated.
The works on display, mostly created in the past year, were done by 12 members of the GWAA as well as a guest artist.
The Gallery highlighted the work of Carol Fraser, who it said continued her inventive use of found, recyclable materials, including paper, plastic, dried leaves and rope in wearable items. Fraser’s painted leather couch, reflecting on the theme of Old Kaie, is also featured.
It also noted the work of Anna Correia-Bevaun, Vice President of the GWAA, in watercolour, pen and ink, and pastel. The other GWAA artists whose works were highlighted were Tara Bentinck and Merleen Forde, while it was noted that the guest artist, Collette Jones-Chin, painted a series reflecting meditations about time.
According to the Gallery, the exhibition also features the work of younger artists and newcomers such as Burrowes School of Art (BSA) graduates Aiesha Scottland and Sheena Henry, who experimented with woven fabric, threads, cords, wire and tibisiri in three dimensional collage. Nyota Killikelly, on the other hand, it added, displayed sculptures in wood and cement although she graduated from BSA specialising in painting and textiles.
The exhibition will run until October 25. The Gallery’s opening hours are 10am to 5pm from Monday to Friday and 2pm to 6pm on Saturdays. Admission is free.
