After a closely contested opening day of the 2014 Inter Services Athletics Championship (ISAC), arch rivals the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were separated by eight points when the day’s events ended yesterday at the GDF Camp Ayanganna ground.
Defending champions GPF, who were touted as favourites before the commencement of the championships and has recorded 130 points on the first day are trailing the host, GDF who scored 138 points.
Following GDF and GPF in the points standings are the City Constabulary (21 pts), the Guyana Fire Service (19 pts) and in the cellar position, the Guyana Prison Service on 11 points.
Some of the highlights of the day included victories for national distance runner Cleveland Forde, Shawn Semple, Janella Jonas and Patrick King.
Forde, who represented GDF outran his competitors to take the Men’s 5000m final in 15:52:2. Tyshon Bentick (16:02:4) of GDF was second and Nathaniel Giddings (16:34:2), third.
In the Women 3000m final, GDF claimed a clean sweep as Jonas won in 11:14:2s while Carlissa Atkinson (11:18:8s) and Alicia Jack (12:30:03s) finished second and third respectively.
King (6.95m) of GDF won the Men’s long jump followed closely by Yoel Benjamin (6.91m) in second place and Carlos Haynes (6.57m) while in the Women’s long jump Tracey Moses of GPF dominated her colleagues with her jump of 5.57m. Moses received fierce competition from GDF’s Letitia Myles and Aniqua Powley, who came in second and third respectively.
Other results for the day include; Men’s 100m heat 1; 1st Davin Fraser of GDF (10.4s) and 2nd GDF Rupert Perry (10.7s). Heat 2; 1st GDF Akeem Stewart (10.5s) and 2nd GPF Shawn Semple (10.7s).
Women’s 100m heat 1; 1st GDF Aniqua Powley (11.9s) and 2nd Akelia Alves of GPF. Heat 2; 1st GPF Onika Eastman (11.9s) and 2nd GDF Tiffany Carto (12.1s).
Men’s 400m; heat1; 1st GPF Winston George and 2nd GDF Darren Henry. Heat 2; 1st GPF Shawn Semple and 2nd GDF Patrick King.
Women discus; 1st GDF Natasha Alder (30.72m), 2nd GPF Sophina Vanderstoop (28.28m) and 3rd GDF Vanetta Wayne (27.45m).
Action continues today and tomorrow at the same venue.
