The Guyana Cooperative Credit Union League (GCCUL) is reminding members to be vigilant as it joins the world body in commemorating International Credit Union Day today.
In a press release, President of the GCCUL Denise Benjamin said the movement has withstood numerous challenges over the years and as it enters into a new year, the Guyana and wider Caribbean movement continues to wrestle with policies designed to test its independence and traditional modus operandi.
Nevertheless, Benjamin urged the members to be vigilant, stand by the credit union, learn to be thrifty, set responsible goals and work assiduously as the credit union remains a force for positive change in society through its motto: “people helping people.” The GCCUL recognises the need for credit unions to remain a viable vehicle for economic development by adopting the necessary policies for membership to continue to access low-cost loans for housing, vehicle acquisition, education, medical, funeral, legal and other expenses, Benjamin said.
The GCCLU has links to more than 100 cooperatives in the Caribbean and the world over.
Today’s observance, a reflection of its 66 years of service, is being held under the theme ‘Local Service Global Good.’
