The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) remained ahead after accumulating 157 points on day two of the Inter Service Athletics Championships (ISAC) at the GDF, Camp Ayanganna ground.
Though they were hard pressed by stiff competition from defending champions, the Guyana Police Force, GDF ended the day on 295 points, a mere one point ahead of GPF. Trailing by a fair distance is the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) while City Constabulary and the Guyana Prison Service are on 37 and 26 points respectively.
Kevin Bayley, Letitia Myles and Janella Jonas dominated three of the 19 finals during the course of the day.
GPF’s Kevin Bayley dominated the field to claim the men’s 800 metres in a time of 1:54.7s. Trevor Scotland finished second in a time of 1:55.3s while Ornesto Thomas was third in 1:56.4s.
GDF’s Letitia Myles, known for her sprinting prowess, produced a stunning performance to finish atop the female triple jump event with a jump of 11.32 metres. Myles was followed by seasoned campaigner from GPF Tracey Moses who registered a jump of 10.91 metres while Shinella Adams was third with a jump of 10.26 metres. Jonas, of GPF, was at the summit for a second time after she won the women’s 800 metres to complement her impressive 3000 metres win on day one. Jonas finished in 2:22.04s with Carlissa Atkinson second with a time of 2:26.2s while Dellie Williams finished third in 2:29.8s.
In other events, GDF’s Leslain Baird claimed the men’s triple jump with a distance of 14.54m to rewrite the record books. Baird was also triumphant with his javelin throw, winning that event with a throw of 57.7 metres.
GPF’s Julio Sinclair won the men’s shot put with a throw of 13.58 metres defeating GDF’s Cupido Pablino who threw 13.58 metres for second. Ronald Payne was third with a throw of 12.90 metres.
GPF’s Natasha Alder now has a field double after winning the female javelin with a throw of 33.91 metres. Andrella Asreham finished second with a throw of 32.40 metres while Stacey Wilson was third with a throw of 30.31 metres. GDF won the 800 metres sprint medley exhibition over GPF women in a time of 1:45.6s. Police was second in 1:46.5s while City Constabulary finished third in 2:21.2s while in the men’s 1500 metres sprint medley relay GPF extorted some revenge with a comfortable win, clocking 3:18.5s. GDF finished second in 3:31.3s while GFS third in 3:50.1s.
GDF’s Davin Fraser qualified for yet another finals after clocking the fastest time of 20.7s to win his heat in the 200m. Olympian Winston George of the GPF won his heat in 20.9s to set up an enticing final between the two athletes. The final day of the championships also known as Joint Service Sports is set for tomorrow at the said ground from 14:00hrs, starting with the ceremonial march pass.
