Four days of international cycling at its very best in beautiful Guyana starts today in the Ancient County.
Cyclists from the USA, Suriname, Barbados and Cuba along with the cream of the nation’s wheelsmen will begin the grueling Ride for Life five-stage Tour of Guyana from 7:30hrs in Corriverton for the coveted trophy and lucrative cash incentives.
After the initial stages today (Corriverton to New Amsterdam then Rosignol to Carifesta Avenue), the eighth annual 266-mile tour continues to the West Coast of Demerara tomorrow.
Action continues in the Cinderella County on Saturday followed by the final stage on Sunday from Linden to Homestretch Avenue.
During the official send off at his Main street ministry, Minister Dr. Frank Anthony stated that a lot of effort has been put into organizing the calendar event which is used to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS. Anthony also implored on the competitors to be disciplined and show a sportsmanship throughout the courses of the event.
Chief organizer of the race, Hassan Mohamed mentioned that 60 starters have registered so far with 15 of them from territories outside of Guyana. Mohamed who gave an overview of the five stages, also revealed that the Team Coco’s outfit which has dominated the event over the years, comprises 13 strong riders but nevertheless challenged the local cyclists to prevail over the baker’s dozen.
National road race champion, Geron Williams along with fellow national riders, Raynauth Jeffrey, Hamzah Eastman, Orville Hinds, Alanzo Greaves, Marlon Williams and top juniors Michael Anthony and Alonzo Ambrose will come up against stiff competition from the foreigners.
Also speaking at the sendoff was President of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Cheryl Thompson who welcomed the overseas riders and urged all the cyclists to have a very competitive and safe ride in each of the stages.
In his address to the cyclists Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, assured the cyclists a safe ride throughout the four days as he said he had spoken to the Commissioner of Police and the Divisional Commanders while also emphasizing that medical equipment and personnel will be on hand throughout the five stages in case any rider needs medical attention
