Guyana has once again secured the regional award for top performance at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations in the person of Elisa Hamilton, who also topped the country.
A Ministry of Education press release issued yesterday said Hamilton, of Queen’s College (QC) won the award for Most Outstanding Candidate in the region. Aliyyah Abdul Kadir and Ryhan Chand, also of QC, took top regional awards for Most Outstanding in Humanities and Most Outstanding in Business Studies respectively. Kishan Crichlow of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School was found to be the Most Outstanding Student in Technical Vocational studies, the release said.
The five students will travel to Jamaica in December where they will receive the awards on the 4th at a ceremony billed for the University of the West Indies Regional Headquarters, Mona Campus, the ministry said, while congratulating the students on their exemplary performance.
A release from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) said Hamilton won the award with acceptable grades in 20 subjects. She achieved Grade I in 19 subjects; Agricultural Science (DA), Biology, Chemistry, English A, English B, Food and Nutrition, French, Geography, Home Economics Management, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Physics, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Spanish, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Physical Education and Sport, Human and Social Biology, and Electrical and Electronic Technology, and Grade II in Religious Education.
Kadir achieved Grade I in 15 subjects – Agricultural Science (DA), Caribbean History, Economics, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, English A, English B, French, Geography, Human and Social Biology, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Religious Education, Social Studies, and Spanish.
Chand achieved Grade I in 13 subjects – Economics, English A, English B, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, and Physical Education and Sport, and Grade II Religious Education and Social Studies, the release said.
Meanwhile, Crichlow had secured Grade I in Chemistry, Information Technology, Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Building Technology (Construction), Electrical and Electronic Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology; Grade II in English B, Physics and Social Studies; and Grade III in Chemistry and Geography.
Last year, Guyana won five of the eight awards offered. Yogeeta Persaud of Anna Regina Secondary School was awarded Overall Outstanding Achievement; Rafena Mustapha of Saraswati Vidya Niketan was Most Outstanding in Humanities; Cecil Cox of QC, Most Outstanding in Sciences; Sasha Woodroffe of QC, Most Outstanding in Business Studies; and Zimeena A Rasheed of Anna Regina Secondary School, Most Outstanding in Technical Vocational Studies.
