With Team Coco’s withdrawal from this year’s ‘Ride for Life’ five-stage road race, first stage winner, Alanzo Greaves was able to reclaim the leader’s jersey yesterday.
The Roraima Bikers standout, will start the penultimate leg of the race this morning in Essequibo with the yellow jersey and a six-second lead on fellow national rider Geron Williams and Robin Persaud after preserving his lead among the locals following yesterday’s third stage.
Greaves, who was trailing Team Coco’s Ruben Companioni and Carlos Ospina heading into the 35-mile stage (Wales to Parika) by more than two minutes,
placed sixth in the event in one hour, one minute and 19 seconds with Williams (same time given) biking in fifth. However, he is still the front runner to take the top honours.
Persaud, who placed fourth in yesterday’s stage, a second faster than Greaves and Williams, is intent on ascending the ranks.
He is tied with Williams for second just six ticks adrift of Greaves.
The stage was won by Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams in 59 minutes and 32 seconds followed by Paul DeNobrega (1h:00:43s) and US based Scott Savoury (1h:01m:11s).
Williams, DeNobrega and Savoury were more than three minutes behind Greaves heading into the stage.
With the huge stage win, Williams gained a lot of ground, and is now lurking at fourth overall now one minute and 32 seconds behind Greaves with more than 120 miles to go.
The 12-strong Team Coco’s unit withdrew from the event after they disagreed with the 30-second penalty which was handed down to them by race commissar, Malcolm Sonoram. The penalty was imposed on the team for infringements of the feeding rules.
Here is how the top six riders overall are positioned before the start of the 62 miles fourth stage which pedals off at Supenaam and concludes at Suddie.
