The Yamaha Caribs avenged their Banks Sevens final loss suffered last month, beating the UG Wolves 19-14 yesterday to win the Windjammer/Golden Brook/Toney Sevens League at the National Park.
Yesterday’s winners scored three tries through speedy winger, Carl Lewis, veteran Walter George and Captain Akeem Fraser. Tournament MVP Theo Henry chipped in with two conversions to pad the score line.
“Hats off to UG but we really wanted to win this after what happened last month,” said Fraser in a post-match interview with the media.
“They pushed us but it’s exciting to come back and defeat them after losing how we lost the last time,” he added.
The Wolves, who came from behind to edge Caribs 26-24 in the Banks Sevens final on September 21, let this one slip away after grounding several passes close to the try line.
Ryan Dey was the main culprit. Following the match he said that the better team won yesterday and he and teammates are looking ahead to winning future tournaments and avenging their latest defeat.
A penalty try, two conversions and a try by Godfrey Broomes made up the score line for the student ruggers.
In the third place game, Pepsi Hornets were the victors after stinging the GDF ruggers 17-7.
Rockford Cummings, Leon Greaves and Jason DeFreitas scored tries for the ruggers in blue and red while captain Ryan Gonsalves nailed the lone conversion.
National players Avery Corbin (try) and Dwayne Schroeder (conversion) were the scorers for the militia men.
