Defending champs St. Pius kept their hopes alive of defending their title, edging F.E. Pollard 2-1 when the fourth annual Petra Organization/Courts Pee football tourney continued yesterday at the Thirst Park ground.
Selwyn Jones opened the scoring for the champs in the fifth minute with a powerful right footed strike from the right side of the field, took a deflection off a defender and settled on the middle of the goal.
The lead would then be doubled one minute later as Raymond Austin netted, rifling his right-footed effort into the lower right hand corner, after cutting into the centre of the box from the left side of the field.
Quincy Williams would eventually pull one back for the Kitty side in the 14th minute, stabbing his effort into the empty net after the ball fell into the his path within the centre of the box, following the St. Pius custodian losing possession of the ball from a tackle from another player.
Also sealing a berth to the next round was Tucville Secondary, who continued their unbeaten run in the event, edging St. Stephen’s 1-0. Rayheem Marques was the difference between the two outfits, netting in the 18th minute.
In the opening match of the day, Marian Academy punched their ticket to the next round as they overcame North Georgetown by a 1-0 margin through a Allister Phyll penalty kick conversion in the second minute following a handball within the area.
In other matchups, Smith Memorial and St. Ambrose played to a 1-1 draw. Stephon Elcock opened the scoring for St. Ambrose in the second minute while Omali Henry equalised for Smith Memorial in the seventh minute.
In other results, St. Margaret’s and South Ruimveldt played to a 0-0 draw while St. Angela’s and J.E. Burnham played to a 1-1 stalemate. Oziah Vieira netted for St. Angela’s in the 14th while Ronaldo Lawrence found the back of the net in the 30th minute.
In the eighth match, St. Gabriel’s defeated Thomas Moore 1-0 through an Isaiah Wray 20th minute conversion. West Ruimveldt sealed a berth to the next round compliments of a walkover win against Comenius Primary.
Also earning walkover victories were Green Acres and East La Penitence who defeated Redeemer Primary and Success Academy respectively. Stella Maris earned a walkover win against Winfer Gardens in their second fixture. In the final matchup, Enterprise Primary and Ketley Primary played to a 0-0 draw.
