The owner of the Shariff Racing Stables and the jockey who rode Princess She Is Not are set to appear at a hearing on October 27 following the establishment of a five-member committee to investigate infringement of horse racing rules and animal cruelty.
It is alleged that in the A and Lower one mile event last Sunday at the Kennard Memorial Turf club meet, the champion jockey for the day, allegedly used probes to shock the Dark Bay mare, Princess She is Not at different intervals of the race in order to win the event.
Princess She is Not, owned by the Shariff Racing Stable went on to ‘shockingly’ upset Guyana’s premier thoroughbred Score’s Even by a half-length and win the first prize of $1.2M for its handlers in the feature race of the PPP President’s Cup.
According to a member of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA), the owner of the Shariff Racing Stable, the horse’s trainer and jockey, will be given seven days notice to appear at a hearing headed by Attorney-at-Law Ryan Crawford at the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club next Monday at 14:30hrs.
“We will give them the seven days notice by today or Monday so it will be seven days before the actual hearing,” said the member adding that during the inquiry, the investigators will be “reviewing the tapes and the photographs that several persons took as evidence and presenting a case and give them an opportunity to defend themselves.”
Some other jockeys that rode on the day, the starter and the handlers who were at the starting gate will also be present at the hearing.
Secretary of the GHRA, Zenzie Goring, Quacy Henry, Francis Chichester (the two stewards that officiated on the day) along with Patrick Davis are four persons that will make up the committee investigating the alleged infractions.
