A motorcyclist was on Saturday night fatally struck down by a drunk driver on the Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice (WCB) public road.
Dead is Edward Ancil Sears, 23, of Lot 4 Bellevue, WCB. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington hospital. The accident reportedly occurred sometime around 7pm on Saturday. In a press release, the police said that initial investigations have revealed that Sears was allegedly overtaking a vehicle and was struck down by an oncoming car.
“The driver of the motor car was tested and found to be over the legal limit in relation to the consumption of alcohol. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations,” the statement said.
When Stabroek News contacted Sears’ family, his mother Marsha Sears said “I cannot say what happened and how it [the accident] took place.”
However, she said, according to information reaching her, her son “was riding home on the [Bush Lot] public road and a car hit him down. The driver appeared to be drunk.”
The security guard explained that when the accident occurred, she was on duty. She recalled that she received an anonymous phone call and was informed that her son had been involved in an accident. When she left work, Sears recalled, she was then informed that her son had died. The woman related that she went to the hospital but when she got there she did not get to see her son as his body had already been taken into the mortuary. Her husband prevented her from going to see her son, she recalled.
The woman also related that investigators visited their home and took statements from the family. She said that based on what the investigators told her, the driver might make an appearance in court tomorrow.
Sears related that they would like to speak with the family of the driver. She said that the family is trying to find out how the accident occurred.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be performed today. The deceased leaves to mourn his parents and seven siblings.
