Twenty-three-year-old Saleem Azeez Abdool had just exited a taxi in front of his Delhi Street, Prashad Nager home early yesterday morning when he was confronted by three men on bicycles who shot him dead and robbed him of his wallet.
Shocked family members yesterday said they were not sure how much money the man had in his wallet but said it would have also contained all his important documentation.
The electrical engineer, employed at a city company, had only started living at the Prashad Nagar house – which is owned by a relative – a few months ago. He is originally from the Essequibo Coast.
A release from the police said the man was confronted by the three men who attempted to rob him and during the incident he was shot and later succumbed.
Speaking to Stabroek News hours after the incident, the man’s relatives said he had arrived home at around 4:30 yesterday morning and as he was about to enter the premises the three men confronted him. They fired four shots at the man and he ran for his life and hid behind one of the large buses owned by the Knight Rider bus company.
But the men did not give up and pursued Abdool and found him crouched behind the bus and fired two other shots which are said to have hit him in the head and shoulder and killed him. The young man was found dead in that same position when the ambulance arrived on the scene.
Neighbours yesterday declined to talk about the incident but one home is equipped with a surveillance camera and relatives hope that police would access some useful feed that may help them to crack the case.
Yesterday, relatives described Abdool as a “loving person who never give any problems.” They said the man-who was the fourth of his parents’ five children-had just started life.
