The Texila American University (TAU) last week said that it has implemented measures to ensure that its foreign students are Ebola free.
In a press statement, the university said that it applauds the proactive measures taken by the government to mitigate the threat of the Ebola virus to Guyana.
The TAU said that the institution closely follows the statistics released from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on the Ebola hotspots – the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone – and they have no students from those countries.
Primarily, the university said, their African student body is mainly from North, South and East Africa.
The university said that it has stopped accepting new applications from Nigeria and Senegal and a few students who travelled recently from Nigeria have undergone medical checks to ensure that they do not have Ebola. Senegal has since been declared Ebola free and Nigeria is on the verge of this status.
The release further said that the institution has taken its social responsibility to students, staff and the entire nation seriously, and since the Ebola outbreak, it has instituted health policies based on the recommendations of the CDC and WHO. Accordingly, TAU has instituted the 21-days waiting period during which time the students were required to be away from the campus and to be monitored regularly and all the necessary health checks for all their foreign students which includes students from Asia, US, UK, UAE and Europe.
