The Gandhi Youth Organisation’s (GYO) losing run in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/ Hadi’s World Inc. first division two-day competition continued yesterday with them suffering an innings defeat to the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC).
GCC’s win was inspired by the efforts of Jeetendra Sookdeo and Vishaul Singh who scored centuries and Raj Nanan brilliant bowling.
Sookdeo (108), Vishaul Singh (122) and Nanan’s 11 wickets propelled GCC to victory by an innings and 103 runs yesterday at the GCC ground, Bourda.
Sookdeo added 14 to his overnight score of 94 while Singh, the other overnight batsman, moved from 40 to 122. Nanan mesmerized the GYO batting line up by taking four wickets in their second innings to add to the seven he took in the first.
GCC reached 350-4 from 66 overs in their only innings before declaring while GYO were restricted to scores of 88 (first innings) and 159 (second innings) all out.
All-rounder Garfield Deroche (50) and Surendra Heeralall (46) were the notable scorers for GYO in their second innings. Gavin Singh took four wickets in GYO’s second turn at the crease.
It was GYO’s second consecutive defeat by an innings after being defeated by the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in similar fashion the previous weekend.
Across at the Everest Cricket Club ground, the Police Sports Club won first innings points against the host Everest Cricket Club.
In their first innings, Everest made 252 all out in 84.2 overs, with Chanderpaul Hemraj top scoring with 51 while Troy Gonsalves and Christopher Surat scored 41 and 34 runs respectively.
Jason Helyger was Police’s chief wicket taker with 3-53 from 19 overs of off spin. He received support from pacers Darsen Larose and Seon Daniels who claimed two wickets each.
Police were restricted for 279 all out from 79.2 overs in their first innings. Their total was influenced by Andrew Lyght Jr. half century (88) while Royan Fredericks (46), Randolph Knights (37), Seon Daniels (35 not out) and Kelvin Leitch (29), chipped in.
National all-rounder Zaheer Mohamed led Everest’s bowling attack with 4-29 from 17 overs while West Indies player Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Surat claimed two wickets each.
Everest batted out the remainder of the day to reach 44 without loss, with Rajendra Chandrika and Tagenarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on 18 and 26 respectively.
