Jimmy Myers, accused of robbing a man at gunpoint of $2M just after he left a city bank, is now a remanded prisoner after being denied bail.
Myers, a self-employed father of three of Lot 1 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, pleaded not guilty to the charge of armed robbery read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts’ yesterday.
It is alleged that on October 17, at Regent Street, armed with a gun, Myers robbed Derrick Khan of $2M.
Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail based on the nature and gravity of the offence and also because of the fact that a gun was used in the commission of the crime.
According to Grant, at about 2:35pm last Friday, Khan left a ScotiaBank outlet with two brown envelopes, each containing $1M.
Upon taking his leave, Grant added, Khan was approached by Myers, who was armed with a gun and tried to get him to release the money.
However, the prosecutor said a scuffle then broke out between the two men and a round went off, after which Khan, out of fear, released the money. Myers then made good his escape on a waiting motorcycle, he added.
The attack was reported to the police and investigations were conducted and Myers was positively identified by Khan in an identification parade, the court also heard.
Myers’ attorney told the court that a swab test was conducted for gunshot residue on his client’s hands and he claimed his client didn’t handle the gun. In response, Grant said a swab test was indeed conducted but the results were not yet released. The court also heard that Myers was charged and convicted over illegal possession of a gun and ammunition before.
As a result, Myers was refused bail and remanded to prison until November 3rd, by which time statements are to be filed.
