Dear Editor,
The “No Confidence Motion,” soon to be tabled in Parliament, against the PPP Government, is part of a long tradition of attempts (sometimes subversive) to remove the said Party whenever they are in Government. The most successful were the British, who in 1953, suspended the Constitution, thus resulting in the removal of the People’s Progressive Party from Government.
Later in the 60’s, the US intervention in British Guiana, saw the CIA funding of the AFL-CIO-sponsored strikes, which involved Trade Unions, Political Parties, Christian Churches, and Civil Society, resulting in the removal of the People’s Progressive Party government in 1964.
In 1997, strikes, arson, and violent assaults on PPP supporters, culminated in the Herdmanston Accord, which saw the PPP/C Government being forced to call fresh elections, even though their term in office had not been completed.
Cometh 2014, the “No Confidence Motion”, sponsored by the Alliance For Change, with the support of A Partnership for National Unity, will now see the removal of the People’s Progressive Party from office; not through the Ballot Box, but rather through a Parliamentary Process, in which all the cards are stacked against them.
It has always been the desire of the Opposition, to remove the PPP/C from office, it has nothing to do with mismanagement, but rather the concept of “who has the right”, to govern Guyana. A golden opportunity, has therefore been provided by the AFC, to achieve what has always been uppermost in their minds.
The ramifications of the “No Confidence Motion,” and the ensuing elections will change the political history of Guyana forever. It will create divisions that will last for generations. The elections I am certain, will be conducted with unprecedented rancour.
The Tenth Parliament, will soon come to an end (thank heavens).
That Assembly will be remembered, for its Budget cuts, the spawning of an environment of deceit, the demonizing of members, and the failure to put Guyana first.
Finally, the sponsor and supporter of the “No Confidence Motion,” during their defence of the Motion, should remember Pyrrhus (319 BC -272 BC) King of Hellenistic Epirus.’
Yours faithfully,
