Furniture giant Courts Guyana yesterday made donations to the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre (PRRC) and the Caribbean Association of Fire Fighters (CAFF).
Courts donated a dining set and a chair suite to the PRRC and over $150,000 in trophies for the 4th biennial CAFF Goodwill Games at a presentation ceremony at its Main Street branch.
Candace Kewley, the head nurse of the PRRC, said Courts has been a major contributor to the centre over the years. The centre was initially established in 1967 to help care for polio patients but now cares for persons suffering from mental and physical disorders.
Kewley said she was very happy and thankful for the donations made by Courts. She said courts had donated furniture
a while ago but they had outlived their value. In addition, she was concerned about the hazardous risk the furniture posed to the patients and staff of the PRRC. As a result, Kewley called Courts for assistance and it immediately responded to the request made by the Centre.
She said the kind gesture will help to make the PRRC safer and provide the staff and the patients with a little more comfort.
Meanwhile, Berbice’s Chief Fireman Compton Sparman, who represented the CAFF, said he was also grateful for the donations and commended Courts on its continuous support. Sparman spoke about the importance of firemen, noting that “While everyone is running away from the fire, the firemen are running to it.”
Compton said he is privileged that Guyana will be hosting the games and said it was much needed stress relief in light of the dangerous demands the job makes of firemen.
The event will feature nine countries—Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, French Guiana and Barbados—and will seek to foster team spirit among the participants. It is scheduled for Friday at the Eve Leary Sports Club.
Courts Guyana Marketing Manager Pernell Cummings said the company is determined to improve the lives of all Guyanese and intends to continue giving back to the public in whatever way it can.
