A Plaisance man was yesterday charged with impersonating a prison officer and illegally acquiring handcuffs.
Andre Singh was released on a total $30,000 bail after a not guilty plea was recorded on his behalf on both charges. It is alleged on October 17th, at Brickdam, Georgetown, Singh, of 17 Prince William Street, Plaisance, gave Corporal Devon Lowe false information in regard to his character by stating that he was a Principal Prison Officer stationed at the Mazaruni Prison. He pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is also alleged that Singh acquired a pair of handcuffs, valued $4,500 belonging to the Guyana Prison Service. Singh pleaded guilty with explanation to this charge. He told the court “it was actually a gift from my uncle. I had it for three years now fetching it around.” He also noted that his uncle is a retired prison officer. As a result of his explanation, a not guilty plea was recorded for him.
Singh was later granted bail and is to return to court on October 30.
