Crandon pleased but says there’s lots more work to be done

National Coach Esaun Crandon said he was satisfied with the performances of the players who participated in the Cricket Guyana Inc. (CGI) organised two-day physical assessment clinic and is optimistic that more progression is on the horizon for the other upcoming sessions ahead of this year’s regional tournaments.

The two-day camp, which concluded yesterday at the Zahif Gym in Thomas Street, Kitty, kicked off early Monday morning at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground where players underwent the Beep Test, 40m Run of Three, shuttles, running between wickets simulation and a series of cardiovascular workouts.

Yesterday’s final session saw the coaches focusing more on lengthy spells of the 4k run at the GCC ground while a good session in the gym which was done in order to help the players focus more on their physical areas.

This session was conducted under the expert eyes of gym instructors and other senior members of the gym who put the players through bench-pressing routines along with squats, leg-presses, chin-ups and other weight lifting exercises.

Crandon explained that despite two good days of training the players have a lot more work to do but he is nevertheless pleased that the overwhelming results surpassed the below par grades from last season. “It was fairly okay. There’s room for improvement.

We had some good scores during the period of encampment we’re looking to put in added work to get the guys fully up to standard.”

Gym session, Crandon stated that he needs more of the players to focus on spending sufficient time in the gym with regards to having their bodies adapt to that type of environment.

“We have a lot of guys who been going to gym and some who have not been going regularly but were part of a gym at some period so we were careful about putting them through their paces and the amount of weights we give them, we don’t want to cause any injuries so we had some guys from the gym guide us on what to do.

“I think there’s a lot of strength work and training to do in that area,” he said adding…”We need to do some more work, there’s not that much time left but we will try and plan the best way forward on how we will strengthen these guys.”

The former national all-rounder hinted that after the two-day break today and tomorrow, the team will resume its encampment on Friday which will run throughout the weekend with various batting, bowling and other cricket related simulations before they prepare to engage in a 4-day practice match which commences Monday.

After the final session concluded at the gym, the respective coaches in; Crandon, Michael Hyles, Albert Smith and Chairman of National cricket selectors Rayon Griffith held a brief discussion with the cricketers, lauding their commitment and enthusiasm shown over the first two days and pointed out that this year’s camp got off to a much better start than that of last season.

They also encouraged the players to not slack up too much over the two rest days and also maintain their focus ahead of the sessions and practice match ahead.
