Guyana’s contingent of athletes and officials were scheduled to depart this morning for Suriname to compete in the second leg of the XX Inter Guiana Games (IGG).
During the five-day sojourn, the cream of Guyana’s under 19 badminton, chess and volleyball players along with cyclists and racquet wielders will lock horns with their Surinamese and French Guianese counterparts on a quest to secure individual and team glory.
From the courts, to the open roads, several venues will be buzzing with activities tomorrow when the visiting sportsmen and women tackle the host and the French in the five disciplines. Guyana will not field a football team.
According to Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, “All systems have been put in place for the athletes to excel at the Games.” The visiting contingent comprises five badminton players, six cyclists, four chess and table tennis players and the male and female volleyball teams.

In the first leg of the Games held here, the locals ran away with the track and field championships, placed second in the male and female basketball segments and finished third in swimming. Suriname trails Guyana in the overall standings while the French are in third.
The aim of the games is to create possibilities for youths to come together and compete in different sport disciplines, focusing on better sport results and better understanding of each other’s culture.
Guyana’s outfit is scheduled to return on Monday.
