Inspired by Dwayne Peters’ all-round performance, minnows Sophia Cricket Club opened their Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) New Building Society second division limited overs campaign with successive victories over the weekend.
Peters on Saturday took five wickets in Sophia’s 35-run victory over the University of Guyana (UG) while on Sunday he blasted 182 runs to lead his team to a 208-run victory over Diplomats.
In their low-scoring encounter against UG, Sophia was inserted by the hosts UG and managed 102 all out in 23.1 overs,
with Leon Griffin (23) being the top scorer. L. George (3-11), Omesh Dhanram (2-28) and Dennis Heywood (2-19) were the chief wicket takers for UG.
In reply, UG fell for 67 in 13 overs as Peters claimed 5-8 from five destructive overs. He was assisted by Griffin and Glenford Stephen, who claimed 3-19 and 2-19 respectively.
On Sunday, Peters belted 148 runs in boundaries (16×4, 14×6) as he led Sophia to 326 all out in 36 overs at UG against Diplomats. He added 88 runs for the third wicket with Miguel Vaughn, who scored 25. His score is the highest individual score so far and was the third century of the tournament.
Peters was the sixth batsman dismissed, run out attempting a quick single. Glenford Stephen chipped in with 39 for Sophia. Bowling for Diplomats, R. Mohamed and S. Barker claimed three wickets each.
Diplomats were restricted to 118 all out in response to Sophia’s mammoth total. L.Burns remained unbeaten on 28 while T. Johnson was run out for 22. Griffin, skipper Zalim Rasheed and Dwayne Joseph claimed two wickets each for Sophia.
Sophia will continue its successful campaign with another double header as action in the GCA/ NBS tournament continues this weekend around the city and UG.
