(Trinidad Express) A CHAGUANAS woman and her brother were shot dead yesterday afternoon by a close male friend of the woman after he had allegedly threatened to kill her that morning.
Police said around 1 p.m., the victims, Deshawn Sobers, 21, and her brother, Trevaughn Sobers, were at the family’s Francois Street, Enterprise, home when the 30-year-old suspect walked in.
According to Veronica Sobers, the aunt of Deshawn Sobers, Deshawn had been in a relationship with the suspect but left him last Friday, citing that he had been very abusive towards her.
Yesterday morning, the man went to the house and attempted to get Deshawn to leave with him, but when she refused he became very angry and threatened to kill her.
Deshawn and other relatives later made a report of the threat to the Chaguanas police.
Later yesterday, the man went back to the Enterprise house, where he spoke to Veronica, asking her why didn’t Deshawn want to leave with him, to which she replied that her niece had already made up her mind and wanted nothing much to do with him.
Veronica Sobers said the man then rushed past her, drew a pistol and opened fire on anyone in the house at the time.
Besides Deshawn and Trevaughn, another one of their siblings, Jamal Sobers and their 72-year-old uncle, Glendford Sobers, were also shot several times about the body.
Police said the gunman then calmly walked out the house and escaped on foot.
Neighbours who heard the gunshots immediately called the police and a team of officers led by Snr Supt Johnny Abraham, along with Insp Teesdale and Sgt Nicholls, rushed to the scene but the suspect managed to escape.
Some of the neighbours rushed all four of the injured to Chaguanas Health Centre, but both Deshawn and Trevaughn were pronounced dead on arrival.
Jamal and Glendford Sobers were transferred to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where they were undergoing treatment up to last night.
Snr Supt Abraham promised to bring the gunman to justice, citing that Chaguanas remained one of the safest areas for law-abiding citizens because of diligent action by the police.
Homicide Bureau officers are continuing investigations.
The two killings took the murder toll for the year to date to 323.
The figure at this time last year was 311.
