Volleyball stalwarts Achievers were last weekend crowned champions in the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) inaugural Super League Volleyball Tournament 2014 which spiked off at the National Gymnasium, Georgetown.
Preliminary matches featured the Demerara men’s teams Achievers and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and two women’s teams Vanguard and the GDF. On Sunday, the competition continued with the inclusion of Berbice teams: Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) and Jaguars.
After two gruelling days of fantastic volleyball, the men’s teams moving into the final were Achievers from Demerara and PMTC from Berbice.
Earlier the two women’s teams provided much excitement, as they dug deep and tried to outplay each other. However, a more defiant GDF team had the final say with scores ending at 26-24, 11-25, 25-21, 18-25, 11-15.
The much anticipated match between the two men’s sides was a marathon of a five-set match up with the first two sets going in favor of PMTC 25-21, 25-23. But the Achievers are known for their determination and vibrancy and did not buckle under pressure and managed to prevail nicely winning the last three sets consecutively 25-19, 25-22, 15-10 as they lived up to their name and prowess.
