Conquerors ticked at walkover, but pleased to be back on top

Fruta Conquerors reclaimed the top spot in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Stag Beer first division league, defeating arch-rivals Sunburst Camptown via walkover in their penultimate fixture on Wednesday at the Tucville Community ground.

Winning Coach Calvin Allen during an invited comment said, “I think it was a disappointing end to a much anticipated game but having said that, it couldn’t have been better for our club as a whole because of the fact we risked no injuries.”

He further said, “We didn’t have the worry of picking up cards or injuries so we have all our players fresh and rearing to go for what should be the final hurdle.”

The home side prevailed over the Campbellville unit after the latter’s failure to field a team featuring a minimum of seven individuals following the sounding of the referee’s game-time whistle.

With the win, Fruta Conquerors regained the top spot, due to their superior goal difference despite being tied on 34 points with rivals Pele. They will now faceoff with the aforementioned side in the final game of the tourney to decide a winner, knowing a draw would be more than enough to secure the title.

On the other hand, Camptown remain in the third spot with 23 points. In the earlier fixture, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) arrested the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 3-1.

Stephon Wilson gave the Bourda-based side the early lead with a first time left-footed effort into the lower right-hand corner, after receiving a flat right-sided cross from Keiron Solomon within the left side of the penalty box.

However GFC’s lead was short-lived as the lawmen equalised six minutes later through Rawle Haynes lobbing his right-footed attempt over the advancing custodian down the middle of the goal, from outside the centre of the area.

The Eve Leary-based side then took the lead for the first time in the matchup, compliments of a Lerone Charles 51st minute strike, lashing his effort into the roof of the net from within the right side of the 18-yard box, after pouncing on a loose ball.

GPF then sealed the come-from-behind win six minutes later as Haynes bagged his brace with a first time finish to the lower left-hand corner, after racing into the centre of the area following a left sided through pass.

Due to the victory, GPF move within two points of third placed Camptown with 21 points. GFC with the loss remain in the fifth spot on 13 points from 13 games. The action is slated to continue at the same venue with the final four league matchups.
