Five on charges over Prashad Nagar murder

Four suspects were yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of Saleem Azeez Abdool, the electrical engineer who was fatally shot near his Prashad Nagar Home during a robbery on Sunday morning.

Another man was also remanded to prison after he was allegedly found with the murder weapon.

It is alleged on October 19th, at Delhi Street, Prashad Nagar, Glenroy Griffith, 21, Julian Mack, 33, Gerald Warde and Justin Griffith, 22, murdered Saleem Azeez Abdool in furtherance of a robbery of an undisclosed amount of cash.

The four men were not required to plead to the charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Judy Latchman

at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.

Meanwhile, it is also alleged on October 22nd, Desmond Williams, 26, of 1267 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, had in his possession 11 rounds of .32 ammunition and also a .32 Taurus semi-automatic pistol without being the holder of a firearm licence. Williams pleaded not guilty to both charges read to him by Magistrate Latchman.

Prosecutor Ricknauth objected to bail for Williams based on the nature and gravity of the offence and also since it is alleged that the gun he was found with was used in the murder of Abdool.

Abdool, 23, of Lot 33 Delph Street and also of Columbia, Essequibo, died of multiple gunshot wounds to head he sustained in the attack, which occurred at approximately 4:30am on Sunday.

Police subsequently video footage of the attack from a property in the area, which led to the arrest of the suspects.

Relatives who viewed the footage said that from what they saw Saleem might have resisted the bandits, since the footage showed him running.

An uncle, who viewed the footage, said that Abdool, who was initially held at gun-point in front of his residence, ran towards a Knight Rider Company bus parked nearby, only to be shot at in the shoulder.

He added that his nephew’s hand slammed onto the parked vehicle, where he hid, until his assailants rode up to the vehicle, spotted him and fired several shots at him. The man said Abdool ran a few steps away but collapsed.

The five men are scheduled to make their next court appearance on October 27th.
