The bigger, better network promises a bigger better tournament.
Yesterday, the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) in collaboration with telecommunications provider Digicel launched the 2014 Guyana Open Golf Cup two-day championships and according to officials of the LCG and Digicel, the tournament is expected to be bigger with a higher level of competition when it tees off on November 1 and 2 at the Lusignan Golf Course.
The launch was held at Digicel’s Barrack Street Head Office where LGC President Dave Mohamed, a few of the overseas players along with Digicel Events Manager Gavin Hope and Communications Manager Vidya Sanichara were present.
Hope pointed out that the company has been behind the sport for some five years and has been
sponsoring the Golf Cup for the past two years.
He said that Digicel has been pleased to be a part of the movement, pointing out that the company was happy to be a part of the biggest golf championship in Guyana.
According to Hope, he was thrilled that players from Canada, the United States of America, Trinidad, Suriname and Barbados will be on hand for the event adding that he expects keen competition amongst the golfers and that the local defending champions keep the titles.
Mohamed said that the LGC was happy that Digicel continues to shower their support and sponsorship towards the development of the sport especially the club’s biggest tournament.
He added that he was overwhelmed after seeing lots of overseas players already in Guyana gearing up in preparation for the competition and was hopeful that the event attracts some 80-odd players.
He disclosed that male and female defending champions Avinda “Ganguly” Kishore and Christine Sukhram were raring to go out and defend their titles come next weekend.
Asked about the golf course, Mohamed indicated that the weather was more than perfect but as per normal the presence of rain would be accepted in small amounts leading up to the two-day event.
Former Digicel champion Roger Rajkumar, an overseas-based golfer, said that he was pleased to be back in Guyana and to be a part of the competition this year. The former champion also signalled a warning for the other competitors especially the local golfers, stating that the overseas contingent will be aiming to give good accounts of themselves. He concluded by lauding the LGC for its new fairways and greens, saying that this is the best he has seen the course in some 10 years.
The Golf Cup is expected to tee off from 7:00am on November 1 and from 6:30am November 2.
Admission for the two days is absolutely free.
