Dindiyal Persaud, 54, of Lot 56 Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara was killed by a taxi as he was crossing the road to catch a bus to visit his sister.
His family was plunged into grief on Thursday around 6.30 pm with news of the accident. Their Diwali celebration was immediately cancelled when they went to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital at Diamond where he died.
Phulmatie Mohan, Persaud’s sister, told Stabroek News that he was headed to her home to celebrate Diwali with her and her family. Mohan lost her husband and mother a few years ago; both dying in one month. She has also buried three sons, one of whom died in a road accident. She stated that each of the deaths had been on holidays and it seemed no matter how she tried to keep her family together they always died.
She said the news of her brother’s death was another traumatic blow to her, since her brothers were all she had left.
