National lightweight boxer Prince Lee Isidore, who recently recovered from dengue fever, defeated Guyana’s Revlon Lake in six rounds to capture the Caribbean Commonwealth lightweight title at the Fine Light Fight Factory Boxing Card, Jean Pierre Complex, on Friday night.
At 10.45 pm, after the national anthems of T&T and Guyana were played, Isidore and Lake began to battle in what was scheduled to be a 12-round bout. After a relatively even first round, the small crowd present woke up in the second round as Isidore got more aggressive in the round which he won.
Isidore continued to dominate his opponent in the third round. After receiving a series of punches Lake was
wobbly as Isidore gained more control of the fight. Isidore’s effort was appreciated by the crowd as they applauded the T&T boxer after the round ended. Isidore used a different strategy in the fourth, not protecting his face, hoping to encourage Lake to respond with some punches. In the fifth round, Isidore pinned Lake on the ropes and fired a series of punches as he closed in on victory. At the end of the round the bout was stopped by Guyanese referee Eion Jardine amd Isidore was declared the winner by a technical knockout (TKO).
After the fight Isidore was delighted with his win saying:“The win tonight I feel really happy about it, I have been working for about 12 years now. I worked hard over the years and I am really thankful to come out successful.”
Isidore, 29, was forced to battle his way back to fitness after suffering with dengue fever two weeks ago. Isidore changed his approach as a result of his illness, fighting at a slower pace. “Normally most people know me to be always fighting, always throwing punches, always moving,” he said.
Although he fought off dengue recently, Isidore seemed fitter than Lake. “One thing you must pride yourself on is condition, you must be able to last the quota.
Normally my pace is a lot faster, this is actually a slower pace fight; because I was coming off dengue he (coach) told me to take it easy.”
Isidore had a special visitor at the venue, Guyanese boxer Iwan Azore. Azore informed the T&T Guardian that he is willing to fight Isidore for the title. Azore went to Jean Pierre to scope out Isidore, hoping to get a chance to competet against him in the near future.
In earlier bouts, Denzil Salazar defeated Kenneth Bishop by a TKO, while Sherwin Wilson and Joel McRea recorded victories over Ian Blue and Selwyn Guy respectively.
