Businessman Randy Charles, allegedly held with a semi-automatic pistol after shots were fired in a city street, was yesterday remanded to prison on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and a quantity of ammunition.
It is alleged that on October 25, at Waterloo Street, Georgetown, Charles, 36, of Premniranjan Place, Prashad Nagar, had a Intratec Luger 9mm pistol, commonly known as a ‘TEC-9,’ in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence.
It is also alleged on the same date, Charles had four live 9mm rounds and six spent shells in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges after they were read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in Georgetown.
According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, during the wee hours of the morning, police responded to a call that someone discharged shots in a menacing manner on Waterloo Street. Upon arriving at the scene, he said, they saw Charles with the firearm in his hand and when they check the pistol four live 9mm rounds were found in a magazine for the weapon and six spent shells were on the ground.
Attorney Ronald Burch-Smith appeared for Charles and asked for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum for his client. However, Prosecutor Grant objected to bail based on the nature and gravity of the offence. His objection was upheld and Charles was remanded until November 10.
