Lionel Klass, accused of critically stabbing a drinking partner, was yesterday remanded to prison after being slapped with an attempted murder charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The charge against Klass states that on October 25, 2014, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Salim Khan with intent to murder him.
The elderly man was not required to plead to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that the parties are known to each other and had been consuming alcohol on the day in question when they had a misunderstanding.
According to Grant, it was during this time that Klass armed himself with a broken bottle with which he lashed and stabbed Khan multiple times about the body, causing him to be hospitalised for the injuries he suffered.
Grant objected to bail, while noting that Khan is still hospitalised in a serious condition. He also cited the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence as reasons for bail to be refused. As a result, his objections were upheld and Klass was remanded to prison. His matter will be called again on November 14.
