Two men were yesterday sentenced to 36 months each behind bars after the court found them guilty of hijacking a Mazda Axela motor car valued $2.7 million.
Mortimer Chan called ‘Yankee’ and Kirtland Scott called ‘Cook-up’ were each handed the sentence by Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts at the conclusion of their trial.
The charge against the men stated that on June 17 at Georgetown, they stole motor car PPP 5786 valued $2.7 million belonging to Ivery Allicock.
The men had denied the charges after their arraignment in June before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and were remanded to prison.
Their matter was then transferred for trial before Magistrate Mc Lennan.
They had never been granted their pretrial liberty.
The police case stated that on the day in question at about 1 am, Allicock parked his car in front of his John Street, Campbellville home before retiring to bed. However, upon waking the next morning, Allicock found the vehicle missing.
He immediately made a report and police, acting on information received, subsequently went to Buxton, East Coast Demerara where the car was recovered.
