The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ruggers nuzzled the UG Wolves and marched to a 19-12 victory to retain the Caribs anniversary Sevens championship on Sunday at the National Park.
MVP of the day, Patrick King, paced the militia men with two tries while Rondell Hutson (one try) and Dwayne Schroeder (two conversions) chipped in to pad GDF’s score line.
Ryan Dey (one try), Lance Adonis (one try) and Godfrey Broomes (one conversion) were the names on the score sheet for the student ruggers.
On their way to the final, the defending champions repelled the Pepsi Hornets 10-7 while the Wolves narrowly defeated the Caribs 7-5.
Before presenting the champion’s trophy to the GDF players, patron of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Kit Nascimento congratulated both teams for the skill and sportsmanship they displayed on the field.
Nascimento also reminded the players of the importance of Guyana recapturing the NACRA Sevens title in Mexico this year, since it is a qualifier for the Olympic Games in 2016. He also urged the players to take their training seriously.
The national team are six-time NACRA Sevens champions (2006-2011).
This year’s NACRA championship will be hosted by the defending champions, Mexico on December 3-4.
