Ptychosperma Macarthurii, the Macarthur Palm, commonly called the Hurricane Palm originated in New Guinea and Australia.
It was named for Sir William Macarthur (16 December, 1800 – 29 October, 1882) a celebrated Australian botanist and vigneron. The Macarthur Palm is very popular in landscaping. Years ago Macarthur Palms found prominence at Palm Court on Main Street, they were planted along the front and side fences in clusters, giving the venue its unique tropical look.
It is an attractive and impressive palm tree you may want to consider planting along your fence or by your swimming pool area as it adds beauty and elegance to your garden. It is an evergreen cluster palm with a prominently ringed trunk and pinnate leaves with soft, square-ended leaflets and green berries that are bright red when ripe.
The Macarthur Palm has adjusted well in Guyana and the Caribbean. It is suitable for hotels, parks and gardens. It grows to approximately 15 – 20 feet in height. Plant it outdoors in a sunny location in well drained, rich soil. This palm likes moisture when young.
Fertilize with slow release Osmocote plant food every 3 months. It can be grown by seeds, but plants are also available for sale.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
