When the calendar flips to November, Guyana’s speed demons begin to intensify their preparations to defend home turf in the third leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC).
This year will be no different.
One third of Guyana’s ‘Big Three’ in the Group 4 category, Andrew King is locked in and fully geared towards leaving the competition in his rear view mirror at the South Dakota Circuit.
As November 16 draws near, King is pulling out all the stops to ensure that he is one
of the drivers for Team Guyana that waves the checkered flag.
Rebuilding the engine in his famed Mazda RX7 is one of them.
“I’m in the process of rebuilding the engine,” King told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
“We (himself and mechanics) will be trying something new to give me like 15 to 20 more horse power. I will be looking to improve reliability since we have been suffering failures of different types for the past two years.”
King added: “We will be getting back the Goodyear tires, the rep called today to say he found four and that is great news since I basically depend on the handling of the car to compete. The tires should help me to be back in the ball park.”
The ace driver then threw in his two cents on Guyana’s chances in 14 days despite a top class foreign invasion.
“We should win this leg, with myself Kevin (Jeffrey) and Mark (Vieira) (the other members of the big three) along with Kristian (Jeffrey) and the drivers, we should be able to hold our own.”
Some international speedsters expected to set the South Dakota Circuit ablaze include Jamaica’s David Summerbell and Peter Rae, Barbados’ Stuart and Mark Maloney and Trinidad and Tobago’s Franklin Boodram.
For King, these names do not matter, what matters most to him is waving the checkered flag in front of his fans. See you there.
