Two young Guyanese are participating in the Sixth Commonwealth Youth Parliament in South Africa.
A press statement from Parliament said Brian Andre Smith and Donna King-Waithe are in Mmabatho, South Africa to participate in this year’s event from November 2-8. They are hoping to gain new and wider knowledge from their participation, which they plan to introduce here on their return.
The duo met on Thursday with Speaker of the House Raphael Trotman, the two chief whips: Gail Teixeira and Amna Ally and the Alliance For Change’s Cathy Hughes who extended felicitations to them.
It is anticipated that 80-90 young people from across the Commonwealth are participating in the event, which will also be attended by a number of youth Members of Parliament under the age of 35. According to the release “the overall goal of the Youth Parliament is to strengthen the democratic process in the Commonwealth by deepening understanding of parliamentary democracy among participants and providing a forum for them to express their ideas, concerns and expectations.’’
Participants will be exposed to the nature of parliamentary operations and functions, while being monitored by experienced parliamentary officials.
