A young man has been sentenced to 56 months in jail after he battered his victim during a robbery in which he managed to get a $1,500 artificial chain.
Anthony Williams, 23, was sentenced yesterday by Magistrate Judy Latchman, in Georgetown, after being found guilty of robbery with violence following a trial.
The magistrate said the sentence was based on the fact that violence was used in the crime and the prevalence of the offence.
She also said the sentence is to deter others from committing such a serious crime.
Williams was charged with robbing Charles Alleyne at Cornhill Street, Georgetown on August 26 and battering him during the attack for the chain.
At his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on August 26,
Williams had pleaded not guilty. The trial, which began on October 21, saw the testimony of three witnesses; two police officers and Alleyne.
